Interoperability on the shop floor: ORBIS takes second place at the Factory Innovation Award with ORBIS DSP
With the innovative ORBIS Distributed Shopfloor Processing (ORBIS DSP) application, the international software and business consulting company ORBIS SE took second place in the prestigious Factory Innovation Award competition in the “Platforms for the connected factory” category. The accolade, which is one of the most important awards for smart factory software in Europe, is awarded in recognition of groundbreaking innovations, technologies and solutions in the manufacturing industry and thus confirms ORBIS’s high status of excellence in this field. It is awarded by the Center for Industry 4.0 at the University of Potsdam in cooperation with GITO Verlag (a Berlin-based publishing house) and the trade journal FACTORY INNOVATION.
ORBIS DSP, a platform-independent solution, impressed the panel of digital and industry experts above all else because it enables interoperability of the IT systems involved on the shop floor. This forms an important foundation for increasing both process excellence and process efficiency. ORBIS DSP consists of an EDGE solution (edge node) and the SaaS cloud-based management cockpit. The EDGE component is installed locally in a network or in the network periphery, which ensures a high level of connectivity and short latency times, and is linked to the production facilities and the backend systems (ERP, MES, analytics tool, cloud platform) by what are known as “asset units”. The shop floor organization, processes and process objects – not to mention the IT systems and machines involved – are modeled and managed in the Management Cockpit. The communication with the EDGE solution takes place through agents and routers.
The EDGE solution collects the data provided by the machine controllers in various protocols, stores it and transfers it to the connected backend systems (ERP, MES, cloud IoT platform, low-code app) in accordance with the rules defined in the cloud-native Management Cockpit. In return, this EDGE component transmits the information relevant to production from the released production orders, which originate either from the ERP or the MES, to the machines.
Pascal Kiefer, Director of the Logistics & Manufacturing Business Area at ORBIS SE, commented: “Creating interoperability on the shop floor is of great strategic importance to us, which is why we are all the more honored and delighted that our ORBIS DSP solution came in second place in the ‘Platforms for the connected factory’ category at the Factory Innovation Award. The trend among manufacturing companies with respect to shop floor processes is moving towards expanding the SAP on-prem landscape to include SaaS cloud solutions from other providers. With ORBIS DSP, we are offering them an innovative solution that ensures smooth cooperation between all applications involved in decentralized IT landscapes.” Of course, the ORBIS DSP solution is constantly being improved and further developed in a targeted manner to meet future requirements on the shop floor and in the IoT environment.
A feature on the benefits of the ORBIS DSP solution can be found on the website of the magazine "Factory Innovation".
In addition, a series of webinars will be held in July on the topic of interoperability in production and logistics with ORBIS DSP and the resulting benefits.
