SAP HANA in sidecar mode: Klingele ignites the turbo for CO-PA reporting

ORBIS AG has implemented the SAP HANA CO-PA Accelerator in-memory solution and the SAP BusinessObjects Analysis Edition for Microsoft Office analysis tool at Klingele Papierwerke GmbH & Co. KG, a leading manufacturer of corrugated base paper and corrugated packaging solutions. With this modern and very powerful platform, the internationally active family-owned company from Remshalden near Stuttgart, Germany, can handle cost allocations for Profitability Analysis (CO-PA) in its SAP ERP application as fast as an arrow and perform analyses down to the line item level. Thanks to the cooperative partnership of all those involved in the project and the high level of commitment of the ORBIS consultants, the new solutions were implemented in just two months.

The data from SAP ERP required for earnings and market segment accounting is now replicated in "real time" to the SAP HANA-based in-memory solution, which is placed alongside the ERP solution in the sidecar model so that the evaluations are available immediately. "Query response times have been reduced by a factor of 50. Whereas it used to take around ten minutes for the desired reports to be available, today it takes around ten to 15 seconds," says Oliver Schiessl, IT manager at Klingele GmbH & Co. KG. This leaves the controlling department, which performs several such analyses per day, more room for core tasks, such as error analysis or the interpretation of key figures that management can use for its decisions.

With the intuitive SAP BusinessObjects Analysis front end, which replaces outdated SAP report generators and "rigid" ABAP reporting, reports on profitability and profitability analyses can also be created much more easily and conveniently than before. The business users in Controlling are provided with the key figure reports in the familiar Microsoft Excel environment, where they can then process the data further or use it for additional calculations without any problems. At the same time, Controlling benefits from unprecedented flexibility in CO-PA analyses, as it can now independently create ad-hoc queries and execute them in almost "real time". By independently obtaining the information they need in the form of a BI self-service, business users are also less dependent on the IT department, which also benefits from this and can use freed-up capacities for other tasks.

And it goes on: In the foreseeable future, the paper and corrugated board manufacturer wants to roll out the SAP HANA CO-PA Accelerator and SAP BusinessObjects Analysis, which is currently used by the controlling department of the corrugated board plant at its headquarters in Remshalden, to all other corrugated board plants. The introduction of special management cockpits is also planned.
